| It’s always a relief to get off nerve-wracking Interstate I-95 on the drive down to Miami. Passing through Jacksonville one morning, I took a detour down Route 13, a scenic drive along the banks of the St. John’s River. I was looking for any remaining vestiges of those enormous cypresses that Winslow Homer had painted a century ago, when I finally found this spot, a still unbuilt parcel on the water. The ghostly forms of the bald cypress draped in Spanish moss lent the scene an eerie feel, giving a sense of what Florida’s wild jungle must have been like at one time. |
