Monet's garden in Giverny, particularly the waterlily pond, is justly famous. Two artist friends and I made the pilgrimage to Verdon, about an hour's train ride from Paris, on a lovely June morning. It was a Monday, when the gardens were closed to the public, but artists were allowed to come on the grounds to paint. There was a small army of gardeners manicuring the plantings but other than that, we had the place pretty much to ourselves. I sat on a bench under some huge trees and painted a small watercolor which later served as a study for this oil painting, and took a lot of photographs.
