I should not have been surprised to find so many Roman ruins in the city of Arles, considering it was the site of the largest port of the Roman empire in Gaul. Because of its location, Arles endured as a major center of commerce for several centuries after the fall of the Roman empire, until the tidal marshes began silting and the shoreline retreated. The ancient amphitheater was eventually destroyed by over-zealous Christians during the late middle ages—only these ruins remain, and yet today they serve as a wonderful backdrop for contemporary concerts.
